Our Mission

A healthy bioregion benefits us all, but the land can’t heal with our current relations to it. All over Cascadia we need to be adjusting our ways — particularly in the built environment. Rather than distancing our urban areas from the world around us, we believe that the integration of wild spaces, strong stewardship practices, and productive agriculture can change quality of life around the Sound.

Imagine a Seattle where instead of monocultured lawns on every block there was instead an abundance of vibrant biodiversity! Songbirds singing sweetly from the canopies, pollinators parading from garden to garden chasing the wafting aromas of Mock Orange and Ceanothus, farm quality fruits and vegetables growing in every neighborhood. This world is possible and we want to help build it.

Our mission is threefold: Create more biodiverse yards that utilize indigenous plants and the best ecological practices; Grow beautiful food and medicine across a distributed network of backyard “micro-orchards”; Create good jobs, workplace democracy, and real wealth for our communities. By achieving our triumverate, we believe we can genuinely improve the wellness of all living beings around us.

...the care of the earth is our most ancient and most worthy and, after all, our most pleasing responsibility. To cherish what remains of it, and to foster its renewal, is our only legitimate hope.
